Since my recent visit to the circ clinic, I have been a little bit spaced out.  Recent discussions with local friends seem to indicate that the very local circ rate among the well-off families around here is 50%.

That is wonderful news.  And just after hearing it, I bumped into a Mum and young son from the USA in my local supermarket.  Odds on she has had him circumcised.  Whether here or “back home” I do not know.  But he will sure be one of the boys with 50% off!

Before I continue with the prep school (circ) history, I must disclose that I got a surprise invitation to my local circumcision clinic yesterday (Saturday) morning.

An acquaintance and her husband were due to have their youngest son circumcised, at four weeks.  Unfortunately, dear husband was summoned into his office to deal with some IT disaster or other.  Mum was all for postponing the circ but there were reasons why they could not.  My friend, M, suggested that I might be available to accompany Mum and Son, being a safe and trusted pair of hands, etc.  (”Safe in taxis” was how I was once described!)

So Mum and Son duly came over and collected me and off we went to the clinic.  One closed Mogen clamp later and Son was duly circumcised!  If I blinked, I might have missed it!  The Doc got everything ready, poised to close and lock the Mogen clamp, looked at Mum, Mum nodded and the deed was as good as done.

Just got off the phone with the Mum, who rang to thank me for stepping in to support her yesterday.  Very appreciative, etc.  No worries on my part.  All over so quickly, quicker than a visit for me to see my dentist!

A perfect start to the weekend.  Now, just what to do with my resulting “excitement”?

These schools prepared boys for their senior (”public” schools) and part of that preparation included ensure that boys they sent up were minus their foreskins (and preferably their frenums/frenulums).

So these prep schools were ideal places to perform circumcisions on those of us who had not been circumcised earlier.  The schools were often situated in remote places, behind high walls.  There was no one for the circumcisee to escape to.  Resistance was futile.  And anyway, most boys did not know beforehand that they were going to be circumcised…  It just happened and there was nothing that a boy could do about it!  Mummy and Daddy were a long way away, and by the time you next saw them, you would have forgotten all about it.  Boys never spoke about those things anyway, even to each other.  It was one of those secrets of a closed society.
